The Fool on the Hill
Day after day, alone on a hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still,
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he’s just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,
But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning ’round.
Well on his way, his head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud,
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,
But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning ’round.
And nobody seems to like him,
They can tell what he wants to do,
And he never shows his feelings,
But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning ’round.
Oh, oh, round, round, round, round, round,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
He never listens to them,
He knows that they’re the fools,
They don’t like him,
The fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning ’round.
Oh, oh, oh, round, round, round, round, round,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And he never listens to them,
He knows that they’re the fools,
They don’t like him,
The fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning ’round.

When&Where
The whole concept behind this project stems from this beautiful song from The Beatles.
I can perfectly remember sitting in the car with my family, driving towards the countryside with the music playing, and most of the time it was The Beatles indeed.
They’ve been my first idea of what music should be, and it’s no surprise to me to feel so attached to their works and art now.
At a certain point in my life, I decided that music should have been a matter of my everyday life.
So I gave up studying engineering in my hometown and really gave myself to it, among other things, by working as a sound technician, playing the guitar in my band and taking singing lessons.
But most importantly, I set about building up a community of people interested in getting themselves a music education: a pool of curious friends that longed for some music that they’d refer to as
‘tougher, more sophisticated or more philosophical’.
And eventually, for some of them, I became their proper music guide through the (g)old contemporary music classics.
But, as the months passed, I noticed that my friends weren’t the only ones missing something. It was I to realise that I was the one who was missing, almost entirely, the contemporary music catalogue of the new millennium.
Then, I began to ask the same friends to let me into their culture by sharing with me some of the new stuff out there, so whenever I’d have listened to it, my friends’ eyes would shine, filled with amazement and joy because of my appreciation and understanding of their language and because of ‘me experiencing what they lived the first time they had listened to the same track’.
So this is how the project came to life, and what it means to me.
At the end of the day, I’m nothing but another fool on the hill.
What it means
“The Fool on the Hill” is a song by the Beatles, released on their 1967 album titled “Magical Mystery Tour.” It was written by Paul McCartney and is primarily sung by him. The song has been interpreted in various ways, but it is generally seen as a metaphorical exploration of the misunderstood or enlightened individual who is perceived as foolish or eccentric by others.
The lyrics describe a solitary figure, the “fool,” who sits on a hill, observing the world around him while being seen as a simpleton or an outcast. The fool is detached from the concerns and conventions of society, and he seems to possess a wisdom and perspective that others fail to grasp. Despite the ridicule and dismissive attitudes towards him, the fool remains content in his own world, unaffected by the opinions of others.
The song’s meaning has been linked to different interpretations over time. Some see the fool as a representation of an enlightened being, detached from the mundane and capable of seeing the truth in a way that others cannot. Others view the fool as a social commentary, highlighting the tendency of society to overlook and underestimate those who are different or unconventional.
Ultimately, “The Fool on the Hill” invites listeners to contemplate the value of individuality, unconventional thinking, and the possibility of finding wisdom in unexpected places. It encourages us to question the judgments and perceptions imposed by society and consider alternative perspectives. – ChatGPT-4
